Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability

Summary

The Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability (CSS) aims at guaranteeing a high level of protection from hazardous chemicals for the EU citizens and the environment, while encouraging innovation and reinforcing EU open strategic autonomy.

The Strategy will shape the future of the EU chemicals framework through a series of legislative and non-legislative initiatives, including the revision of REACH and Classification, Labelling and Packaging regulations.

Why it’s important

Many metals and minerals have hazardous properties. Our industry is continuously striving to ensure they are used under controlled risk and exposure.

We’re willing to engage in shaping and implementing new concepts and ensure the proposed approaches are risk-based and and inorganic specificities recognised.

> 80% of metals

would fall under the definition of substances of concern (SoC)

What we are seeking

We believe that the Strategy should:

  • Fully consider climate and circularity objectives in its implementation
  • Take a pragmatic and proportionate risk-based approach to chemicals management
  • Simplify and improve existing risk management tools rather than create new ones
  • Cooperate with industry to clarify and streamline key concepts.
